Vera A. Vandendries  About The Artist

You could say that the art of Vera Vandendries is a kind of convergence, where tradition meets innovation, tactile meets visual, concrete meets ethereal, kinetic meets digital, and eastern philosophy meets Western technology. Her artistic technique melds these polarities into a new art form that adds cutting edge digital technology to classic artistic methods. According to Vandendries, "With the advent of digital technology, the computer has revolutionized not only our culture, but also art as well. The many possibilities and greater flexibility of digital technology have given a new vitality to my creative process. I believe we are at the threshold of an important shift, so that visual language can communicate more deeply and impact the psyche and spirit more greatly."

In particular, Vandendries is interested in achieving depth and pictorial density through the addition of digital technology. Pictorial density is the illusion of layering color, texture and form. This multi-dimensional approach allows the art to communicate layers of meaning simultaneously and, accordingly, impact various levels of awareness for a dynamic experience.

Nature's Inspiration

Vandendries found her first art teacher in Nature. As a child growing up in northern Minnesota, she was enchanted by the mystery, power, and beauty of the natural world around her. Her appreciation for the color, form, texture, depth, and process of creation embedded in Nature stimulated an early connection to the creative impulse within her. Her interest in the creative process and the artistic form led her to study art, and she received a MFA degree in sculpture from the University of Maryland. For many years, Vandendries taught design at the Montgomery College and pioneered an online course in design.

Creative Outlook

Vandendries' art is suffused with her study of eastern esoteric philosophy, yoga, and meditation, as well as her travels around the world experiencing different cultures and artistic traditions. She is a student of the underlying dynamics of the creative process and their role in unlocking the mysteries of life. An art innovator, she is always experimenting with emergent technologies that can enhance the effect and experience of her art. Each medium and technique she employs is in service to her intention for her art, which mirrors her intention for her life – to connect and help other connect to the divine creative energy within and without.
